Here in Canada, it’s legal for same-sex couples to be married. When I heard from Ellen, (well not directly from her) that Proposition 8 would attempt to amend the law in California, hence taking away gay people’s rights to legally wed in that state, I thought about what can I do to lend my support to my Queer American Peers.

I decided to write a letter because I’m a badass that way. However, before I share it with you, I would like to encourage you to donate to the 8against8 website.

According to Goldstardyke over at thelesbianlifestyle.com, “this is a website with 8 lesbian blogs that have banned together to fight California’s Proposition 8. This November, Californians will be asked to vote on Proposition 8. We’ve joined the NO on 8 campaign because we believe every Californian deserves the freedom to marry the one they love. Proposition 8 would create a separate set of rules for same-sex couples, treating them differently under law.

Regardless of how you feel about marriage, it is a right that belongs to all of us, without exception.

    Now on to my letter!

    Dear Homophobic Heterosexual,

May I call you HH for short? Over the past few weeks you’ve probably been bombarded by quite a few people (both straight and gay) who are encouraging you to vote no on Proposition 8. Rest assured I shan’t be one of them.

    That’s right. I’m on your side…well sort of…

Allow me to explain HH. Your stance is that by allowing gay people to marry, this will ruin the sanctity of marriage between a man and a woman. My position is that by permitting same-sex couples to officially wed, it will destroy the sanctity of my love life between me and other women.

You see HH, good single lesbians are few and far between. I don’t know if you’re aware of this but once lesbians start dating, they immediately move in together and then rarely leave the house. Sure, one of them might venture out for various special occasions: like attending potluck birthdays, purchasing organic vegetables, hunting for sperm…but those moments give me very little time to make an impression upon the object of my desire, whoever she is. And HH, I need to have a lasting impact on her so that in case of an eventual breakup, she’ll come running into my arms.

If we allow lesbians to marry, my potential new girlfriend, whoever she is, will probably never go outside, preferring instead to stay indoors and live happily ever after in perfect wedded bliss. Does this image disgust you HH? Me too…after all, I should be the one living that life, not the bitch, whoever she is, who stole my prospective mate from me.

However, just because there are people out there believing in equality for all doesn’t mean that you and I should be completely discouraged. According to www.divorcerate.org, in America, 41% of first marriages end in divorce. Oh wait…that’s heterosexual marriages…sorry.

You know what HH? On the bright side, since you’re so focused on making sure that same-sex couples can’t legally wed, this leads me to believe you’re not really putting the time, energy, and effort you should in your own marriage. As a lover of women, this is a good thing for me. Even if most lesbians do end up getting hitched for life, almost half the straight girls will be divorcing; which means there’s still hope for the sanctity of my love life…though I fear for the sanctity of yours.

So you go right ahead HH…you vote yes on Proposition 8. You have my blessing.

    Sincerest regards,

    Genevieve Sara Grenier
