I thought I would continue with my GEEK series by talking about comic books. I’ll wait for some of you to either leave the room, or click onto another website…anyone still there? Hello? Hello? *sigh* No one understands me.

Here’s a mostly harmless fact for you: I’ve been collecting comic books since 1994. I started buying them when DC Comics came out with the first volume of the Catwoman series. Inspired and in lust with Michelle Pfeiffer’s portrayal in Batman Returns, http://www.geocities.com/SoHo/9395/catwoman-mp1.jpg, how could I not want to read a monthly comic about a thief who was always naughty but occasionally nice?

Sadly, the series has been cancelled and I can only get glimpses of Catwoman here and there in the DC universe. Maybe I should buy a whip…you know…for nostalgic purposes…

Another “heroine” I’m truly fond of is Agatha Heterodyne from the series Girl Genius. You can either purchase the graphic novels, or you can follow the story online on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays: www.girlgeniusonline.com. I’ve introduced my goddaughters to Agatha because I want them to know how much science is cool and that girls can do anything. Plus, when I read the novels to them, I get to do some funny voices.

As I was doing a bit research about my favourite comic books, I just discovered a few minutes ago that Birds of Prey will be cancelled in February. You suck DC! You suck big time! How am I going to get my fix of gorgeous red-headed Barbara Gordon aka Oracle now? You cancelled Catwoman and now this? Bastards! Do you know how hard it is to find red-headed librarians?

Ahem…sorry. The reason why this series is so great is because it has an all female cast with the occasional appearance of a few guys, you may know them as Batman, Robin, Nightwing (old Robin), and Green Arrow. While there may not have been any real subtext between Black Canary and Oracle, or Oracle and Huntress, or Huntress and Black Canary, or Black Canary and Huntress, or even remotely any hint of a potential ménage à trois…um…where was I going with this? Oh yeah…while none of these characters are lesbians, the way their friendships developed over time made for some really funny and touching stories.

I’m also a huge fan of Fallen Angel. I don’t want to divulge too much about the character Lee and her stay in Bete Noire…but I definitely recommend giving the series a chance. Peter David has a unique perspective on God and certain biblical stories.

It goes without saying that I collect the new season 8 of Buffy the Vampire Slayer in comic book form. Joss Whedon puts the awe in awesome. Buffy and the Scoobies are back and though they’ve grown, they’re still fundamentally the same gang I fell in love with in Sunnydale. I may lose more lesbian street cred by saying this…but I would have Joss’ babies.

The latest addition to my ever-growing collection is Wonder Woman. I started collecting the newest version written by Gail Simone. Ms. Simone is one of the few female writers in a predominantly testosterony field of geeky boys who grew up to still be geeky boys trapped in geeky men bodies. I would have her babies too. Do I get my lesbian street cred back?

I can’t be the only geeky lesbian who loves comic books…tell me what are some of your favourites? Any suggestions?

Wait a minute! I am a Librarian and I have red in my hair! I would dye my hair full red just for you Ms. Attic and then we can head out saving the world from the dark side.

      ahh librarians and red-heads..

I’m a big fan of WATCHMEN and kinda.. just starting to pull the geeky comic book stuff on my side. I like the Sandman because they’re all made by different artists, gets my artsy me happy. Started to collect the classical Sin City just to compare the real stuff to the movie.

I love Stardust as a graphical novel – not sure if that counts and then, out of curiosity I bought V for Vendetta and.. kinda have to get back into it – didn’t clue me to the pages like the others books.

Something found out at work and which needs more of my attention: Fell – it’s apparently just starting and my boss got the first book – waiting for the others to be released.

It’s a detective cop story in a very gritty dark city – it’s awkward and creepy how the vibe is transmitted so well, like Max Payne meets Sin City but in shades of blue with burst of red, orange and yellow.
