I didn’t mention this in my last column, but I spend a mini fortune on comic books every month, which is why I’m thrilled that I can also get my comic fix for free online. Following is yet more proof as to why I don’t have a girlfriend, freaky geek that I am.
Here’s a list of webcomics I like to read from Canadian and American writers whom I think are absolutely brilliant, witty, fantastic storytellers, and downright hilarious when it comes to punchlines.
Penny and Aggie is written by T. Campbell and drawn Gisele Lagace.. This webcomic is centered on the two eponymous high school girls, Penny Levac and Aggie d’Amour. Penny is a blonde, over-confident and somewhat arrogant teen queen, who is on top of the social circles in school, and Aggie is an eccentric outcast who takes pride in her rebelliousness. It’s one hundred more times bitchier than Betty and Veronica.
Something Positive is written and drawn by R. K. Milholland, the comic is characterized by a cynical tone and off-beat humor, including its portrayals of geeks, gamers, and goths. The man is a bit sick in the head but since I have a morbid sense of humour I can’t help but find him funny.
Looking for Group is a fantasy-themed webcomic written by Ryan Sohmer and drawn by Lar DeSouza. The comic follows the quest of Cale’Anon (an elven hunter) and Richard (an undead warlock), as well as their companions.Having been the only girl allowed to play Dungeons&Dragons with the boys around the age of 11, this comic makes me slightly nostalgic for those days. I say slightly because the boys were smelly back then…and may still be stinky now.
Out There is written by R.C. Munroe. This comc is about Myriam’s trials and tribulations working at her best friend’s Sherry’s bar. Myriam is beautiful, and shallow, but she knows it, and so do her friends. Yet she’s so much fun to be around they can’t help but forgive her wrongdoings.
The Challenges of Zona has been a delightful surprise. Being in love with Xena for a number of years, it wasn’t that hard to develop a crush on Zona. I have to admit that in the beginning I really thought this was going to be a geeky boy’s excuse to write a story about a blonde woman with big boobs, but the author has created a funny, compelling tale…while still writing about a blonde with big boobs.
YU+Me is written by Megan Rose Gedris. The story began as your typical teenage girl falling in love with another teenage girl…but now in its third volume, the story has some magical dreamlike aspects that are keeping me on my toes.
I can’t mention Yu+Me, without mentioning I Was Kidnapped by Lesbian Pirates from Outer Space, another of Ms. Gedris’ comics. I think the title says it all.
Brendan Douglas Jones created Breakfast of the Gods and I can’t even begin to describe how much I’m enjoying this tale. If you’re a fan of cereal…and I mean a real fan as in you won’t eat toast…you’ll enjoy this series.
The Non-Adventures of Wonderella by Justin Pierce makes me laugh out loud once a week…which is awkward on a Monday morning when everyone is grumpy at work.
I cannot put enough emphasis on the fact that if you google this comic, make sure you put striptease COMIC and not just striptease. Again, very awkward moments at work. Striptease is written and drawn by Chris Daily, and after 800 strips, the stories and characters are just as interesting as they were from day one.
Flat Feet and High Heels is written by John S. Troutman and also makes me laugh out loud every time I read it, especially Felicity, the lesbian secret agent spy.
Angels 2200 is a webcomic written and illustrated by the New Zealand artist/director Peter Haynes with original concept by Nathaniel Savio. This science fiction story is set in the year 2200, ten years after the Genetic Plague killed 99.9% of the male human population on Earth and its off-world colonies. During the chaos, the colonies rebelled and a resource-desperate Earth is now trying to bring them back into line. The story follows the old Aurora-class carrier “Outcast” and its poorly trained crew on their mission to put down the revolution in the Risae Asteroid Belt near Mars. This webcomic isn’t updated on a regular basis due to Mr. Haynes’ busy schedule, but if you’re patient, the long gaps are worth it for the unexpected twists and turns his plots take.
I confess that I have a few more webcomics on my list but these are the ones I really feel strongly about. I do sincerely hope you’ll take the time to read some, if not all of them…granted as long as you’re single and don’t have a life.

Thanks for sharing – will definitely check them out and let you know
Happy holidays miss! Hopefully we’ll get to drink a delicious rum & coke in a near future
