Geeks rejoice! The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) has been repaired and is back on track with trying to answer a few essential Universal questions: like what caused the Big Bang?; are there parallel universes/dimensions?; what exactly is dark matter?; and does the Higgs boson also known as the God Particle actually exist?
For those of you who are not addicted to Wikipedia like I am…I’ll give you an explanation as I understand it. The LHC is a particle accelerator (the largest in the word, lying in a tunnel that is 27 km or 17 miles long), beneath Geneva, Switzerland. And when I say beneath, I mean 175 metres or 570 feet below the ground. Essentially, this huge gigantic scientific wonder is designed to find out how the Universe was created by taking protons and smashing them together at almost the speed of light.
Does anyone else think it’s funny that in order to find out how we were created, you have to destroy something? Men. Sheesh. Oh come on! I’m allowed one sexist joke every once in awhile.
The experiments conducted with the LHC are going to open up new doors for physicists everywhere…and the geek in me, though not very good at physics at all, is thrilled.
