My comments to an After Ellen column about “blackfacing” for Halloween.
Some people felt that it wasn’t politically correct, others felt that the topic was being taken too seriously, and some felt that it wasn’t an appropriate subject for the website since it didn’t have a lesbian or bisexual theme. I disagreed:
I find it incredible that there is such a backlash about blogs that in some people’s opinions have nothing to do with being lesbian or bisexual on this website.
In the past After Ellen may have solely focused on lesbian and bisexual topics but is there no room for talking about other subjects? Especially issues that address other minorities?
As women who love women, I’d like to think that this website doesn’t just focus on how hot we think certain celebrities are, regardless of their sexual orientation. For a website that gets close to a million visits per month, I think it’s awesome that we can discuss everything from socially aware subjects that affect the world we live in, to Maxim’s 100 Top Babes’ list.
I can come here, read the headlines and if something is not of particular interest to me, I simply won’t read it. I don’t feel the need to criticize the content because the people working behind the scenes are providing us with a service that is lacking elsewhere. I get to be informed, amused, intrigued, and sometimes thanks to certain pictures, just a wee bit aroused.:)
I don’t think there’s anything wrong with providing commentary that can be useful to the writers…like hey, you spelled a name wrong, or perhaps recheck a fact or two. One of the reasons why After Ellen has been able to broaden its horizons is thanks to its readers who have contributed countless little tidbits from around the world. This and the dedication of the After Ellen staff is the reason why After Ellen has been able to grow over the years. And for this, I am truly grateful.
Thank you everyone, readers and writers alike, for making After Ellen what it is. A website where I can be entertained and intellectually stimulated.
