For Kayla: 60 Million Girls
Jan 17th, 2010 by GSGrenier
One of Sunshine’s best friends, Miss Kayla, donated along with her mom over $100.00 to the Canadian Red Cross for the Haiti cause. All Kayla asked was that I dedicate a post to her…and so it shall be done.
Since Kayla is one of the smartest people I’ve ever had the pleasure of meeting, I thought it would be appropriate to introduce you to the 60 Million Girls foundation.
Every year, the foundation raises funds to help support at least 2 education projects in developing countries with the greatest gender disparity in school enrollment. According to their website, basic quality education:
- Provides girls with access to health and nutrition information for themselves and their families - including helping to prevent the transmission of HIV/AIDS.
- Gives them the knowledge to provide economic support to their family.
- Delays marriage and pregnancy, thereby lowering infant and maternal mortality.
- Is more likely to inspire a woman to send her children - both boys and girls - to school, thereby increasing the likelihood of future generations receiving an education.
I’m a firm believer that if we are to change the world for the better; we need to educate more women on a global level…and yes, let’s not forget about the boys either. But by empowering girls with an education, they are more likely to stand up for themselves, their rights, and their emotional and physical well being. Not to mention that they will give back by helping to improve the quality of life for their families, their communities, and with time…their countries.
Thanks to the hard work of the 60 Million Girls foundation, slowly but surely, the members and volunteers are making the world a better place to live in…one girl at a time.
